Through the years Michael Littlefield has had his hands in the many facets of the concrete industry, and in 1996 he launched Custom Concrete Design, Inc (CCD). He was one of the first installers of stamped concrete in the state of Maine and his name has become recognized nationally for the refined quality of his craftsmanship and for his work on some of the region’s most unique and creative concrete projects.
During the first 10 years, the company specialized in decorative and stamped concrete for mostly exterior applications. For Michael, operating in the northeast originally meant that his concrete business was a seasonal business; therefore, winters became a time for travel and exploring the potential of concrete…inside. Through the years his work and play has inspired new and creative ways of using concrete, finally leading Michael to expand his vast services to include ground and polished concrete floors, concrete countertops, fireplace surrounds, sculptural concrete and décor.
In 2007 Michael launched Mélange Studio, a sister company to CCD geared toward countertops, fireplaces and a modern line of unique and heavy concrete tables. Most recently, in 2009 Michael added Polished Concrete of New England to his concrete family to serve the growing demand for ground and polished concrete floors and exteriors. He is again one of the first and only providers of the polished concrete state and region-wide.
Though it may sound complicated, it’s not - just three different names for three different services (polishing, stamping and countertops) - and just one owner who’s on every job from start to finish. Michael’s involved with planning and design, coordinating with contractors, architects, designers and other subs. He’s onsite working with his crew and oversees every aspect of the work to make sure it comes out as close to perfect as possible.
All told, Michael’s work has been featured multiple times in national publications like Concrete Décor and local publications like the Portland Press Herald. He has won numerous awards for his work, including consecutive awards in 2008 and 2009 from renowned concrete master, Fu-Tung Cheng of Cheng Design for the Balance Fireplace and the Megik Chair.
Michael prides himself in having an extensive background in concrete – he has a relationship that has taken years to develop, but has provided him with a much greater understanding of the product and all it has to offer. He is passionate about creating with one of the only mediums he is comfortable, and lucky for clients, he’s not at all afraid to get his hands dirty.
